Summer weddings are filled with sunshine, golden-hour glow, and an undeniable sense of romance. But with all that beauty comes the challenge of beating the heat! Whether you're planning an intimate backyard ceremony or a grand outdoor celebration, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your wedding seamless and your guests smiling.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning a summer wedding—plus helpful tips to make sure your loved ones stay cool and comfortable.

1. Pick the Right Time of Day

The midday sun can be intense, especially during peak summer months. Consider scheduling your ceremony for late afternoon or early evening when temperatures start to cool and lighting is at its dreamiest. Not only will your guests thank you, but your photos will have that soft, golden-hour magic.

2. Offer Shade and Cooling Options

If any part of your wedding is outdoors, be sure to provide shaded areas like tents, parasols, or lounge spaces with umbrellas. You can even offer fun extras like hand-held fans (custom ones double as great favors!) or misting stations to help guests cool off.

3. Hydration is Key

Make hydration part of your celebration! Offer infused water stations with citrus, cucumber, or mint for a refreshing touch. You can also provide non-alcoholic drink options and popsicles or frozen treats during cocktail hour to keep everyone energized and refreshed.

4. Keep Dress Codes Summer-Friendly

Encourage your guests to dress for the weather by suggesting breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon. For the wedding party, lighter suits or mix-and-match options can help everyone stay comfortable while still looking chic.  Grooms, if you are wanting to rock a velvet look this this groom did, it is totally an option!  Our velvet is lined so you do have a barier from the heat of the fabric.  You can also consider wearing a lighter fabric for the ceremony and then a velvet coat as your reception look to rock as the sun goes down and the weather gets cooler.

5. Protect Against the Sun

Provide sunscreen at welcome tables or in bathroom baskets so guests can easily reapply throughout the day. You might even consider having a few extra pairs of sunglasses on hand as a fun and practical detail.

6. Consider Summer-Proof Décor and Florals

Heat can be harsh on certain flowers and décor elements. Work with your florist to choose blooms that can withstand the heat (think: orchids, calla lilies, or succulents), and make sure delicate decorations are secured in the shade.

7. Plan for Bugs

Warm evenings often bring out uninvited guests—like mosquitos. Use citronella candles, bug spray stations, or natural repellents to keep your guests comfortable during the reception.

A summer wedding brings with it long, light-filled days, lush backdrops, and a joyful, carefree energy. With thoughtful planning and a few warm-weather touches, you can make your wedding as comfortable as it is unforgettable.
